START & FINISH LOCATION
TOUR DE FRANCE 2018 TEAM NEW ZEALAND, with Hayden Roulston
Yes, we cycle the entire 2018 Tour de France starting from Northern France before heading south to the Pyrenees across to the Alps and the last day in Paris.
The aim of TDF 2018 – Team New Zealand – is to give you the nearest experience you can realistically get to being part of a pro-team. Tailor made training and nutritional plan, Team bus, service vehicles, dedicated mechanics, massage and soigneur support.
Riding a day ahead of the tour gives you the experience of riding through the towns and villages decked out with le tour paraphanalia and lined with fans eagerly anticipating the arrival of the race.
The exact route and dates will not be released till October 2017, but we will be physically riding from June to 29th to July 21st 2018. The first three stages have been released and take part in the beautiful Vendee region of North West France.
We are looking for up to 12 cyclists, ready to take on arguably the greatest challenge in sport and in the process raise funds for The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.
To give the selected riders the best possible chance of success we have secured the services of New Zealand cycling legend and ex TDF rider, Hayden Roulston who will personally train and prepare you for this ride of a lifetime.
We expect the tour to fill up quickly and are planning our first training camp for all successful riders, to take place early November. This will be led by Hayden who will set the scene for the 6-7 months of hard training ahead.
The travel quote for the tour is circa NZ $18,000 -$20,000 (including flights, accommodation and meals) and is in the process of being firmed up. This amount can be fund raised.
Full details will be given at the Pre Tour Awareness Day.
We request that all applicants on the Tour De France 2018 Team New Zealand meet Jonathan, the Tour Director at a mutually convenient time in September/ October or until such time that the tour is fully booked.
During the day you will learn more about the trip, meet Jonathan, ask questions, undergo initial fitness testing at V bike using the FTP method and then finish off with a relatively gentle 50 - 70km ride in the nearby Waitakere ranges.
V Bike is the country's first and only indoor cycling studio that's dedicated to helping bike lovers achieve their goals.
We do not charge for the Pre Tour Awareness Day. Donations to the Mental Health Foundation are however gratefully received.
We meet at V BIKE located at 23 Westhaven Drive, Auckland at 10am. Jonathan will meet you and go through the day with you.
Once you have completed the FTP test, you can shower, before we go over the results and spend some time going over our vision for the tour, what's included, what's not and answer any questions you may have.
We then have the opportunity to head out for a gentle ride, typically to the Waitakere ranges, allowing us time to get to know each other better and enjoy some time on the bike.
We aim to get back to V bike by 4pm, though can usually be flexible to suit flight times if required.
You will need to bring your usual road bike and a couple of sets of riding gear along.
Towel and water bottle for the FTP test (you will get sweaty)
Money for lunch at a suitable café during our ride
Usual riding kit for a 2 -3 hour road ride, spare tube etc.
Positive attitude and lots of questions !
